Mai Xiong is sworn into office on December 5, 2020

Local Warren resident and small business owner, Mai Xiong was sworn into office by County Clerk Fred Miller on December, 5, 2020 at the Author J. Miller Park in Warren, Michigan. Xiong is the first Asian-American elected to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners and the first Hmong-American elected in Michigan.

Surrounded by a small group of friends and family standing under the pavilion and wearing masks, Xiong thanked supporters, volunteers and her husband for helping during the campaign earlier this year.

“What a cold morning it is but my heart is warm as I am surrounded by my family and friends. I am so grateful that my mom is here with us and able to witness this moment. I wish that my father were still here to celebrate with us too. Who knew a little girl that grew up poor in a refugee camp could some day have a seat at the table with others. This wouldn’t have been possible without the educational access, equal opportunities and democracy of our great country. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you. Now the hard work begins.” – Mai Xiong
Xiong is scheduled to start on January 7, 2020 where she will meet with the other 12 commissioners at their first meeting to vote for a new chair, vice chair and sergeant of arms.
