“A Voice For Our Families”

Mai Xiong has declared her candidacy to run for Macomb County Commissioner in District 2 serving Centerline and Warren. Xiong is the first Hmong-American woman to run for office in Macomb County, Michigan’s third largest county.

Xiong has lived in the county for over 17 years. She and her husband chose to make Warren their home and start their family there. They have four children. Their two eldest children attend elementary school in Warren Consolidated Schools.

Mai has a vision for Macomb County to be the best place to raise a family, find meaningful work, and grow a business. She wants the county to be an affordable and welcoming home to families of all backgrounds. She hopes to pave the way for more women and people of color to run for office and wants to see leadership in county government that is more representative of the current demographics in Macomb County. If elected, Xiong will be the first woman of color to represent the Macomb County district 2, serving all of Center Line and parts of Warren.

“Over thirty years ago, my family and I escaped poverty, persecution, and war, and settled in Akron, Ohio. I was fortunate to attend public schools starting with pre-K and go on to graduate with a degree from a 4-year college. I want families in Macomb County to have access to the same opportunities that I did. We need to ensure our children have access to quality education, our seniors are cared for, and vital services that our residents rely on protected.

Macomb County is such a diverse community and our leadership should reflect that. Our children, including my own, need to see leaders that look like them. I hope to serve as an inspiration to them and help create the future they deserve.”

Mai graduated with honors from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit with a BFA in Graphic Design. Xiong is a refugee of war and was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. Xiong came to the United States in 1987 at the age of three with her family under the refugee resettlement program and is among the first in her family to graduate college.

She is an entrepreneur and small business owner. As a frugal, budget-conscious mom of four, she founded the company, Simple Coupon Deals Inc, a coupon blog about saving money and spending less. She also owns the first Hmong-American modern clothing brand with a storefront located at 8312 East Twelve Mile Road in Warren, Michigan.
