Mai Xiong Announces Candidacy for Michigan House of Representatives

WARREN, Mich. – Monday, November 27, 2023

Macomb County Commissioner Mai Xiong, a Democrat, is running for Michigan’s 13th House District in the special election called by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The primary election will occur on January 30, 2024, and the general election on April 16, 2024. House District 13 includes parts of Warren and Detroit.

“As a parent, I know the challenges families continue to face,” Xiong said. “I have a proven record in listening to my constituents, working across party lines, and delivering results. I look forward to winning this important election and maintaining Democrats’ majority in the House.”

Xiong gives back to her community through coordinating local road cleanups and founded a nonprofit civic engagement group dedicated to serving economically disadvantaged communities of color.

“As a County Commissioner, I have prioritized bipartisanship, equitable allocation of local tax dollars, as well as State and Federal funding, and championed community services that help families who need it the most,” Xiong said. ” I will continue to fight for our community and ensure we have a voice at the table.”

About Mai Xiong

Born in a refugee camp in Thailand, Mai Xiong was 3 years old when she arrived in the U.S. with her family in 1987. Her parents, of Hmong descent, were part of an ethnic group in northern Laos that aided America during the Vietnam War. Her parents eventually fled to avoid persecution.

Nearly ten years after arriving, Xiong received her U.S. citizenship in 1997. Xiong attended Macomb Community College and went on to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies. Xiong is also a graduate of Harvard Kennedy School – Senior Executives in State and Local Government, and a Michigan State University – Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) Alumni.

First elected in 2020, Xiong is serving her second term on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. Xiong and her husband, Adam Kue, have four children who attend Warren Consolidated Schools.
